Optimizing Global Trade via Smart Port Digital Twins
Transform maritime logistics with real-time AnyLogic simulation and NVIDIA Omniverse visualization to eliminate bottlenecks and reduce carbon footprints.
Maximizing Maritime Throughput and Operational Intelligence
EMAA Blue Industries, in partnership with ALSANX, has deployed a cutting-edge EBI Platform solution to revolutionize port scheduling and yard management. By bridging the gap between raw operational data and strategic simulation, we enable port authorities to visualize complex logistics in a high-fidelity 3D environment. This project moves beyond simple tracking; it empowers the workforce with an Operational Assistant that simplifies complex decision-making, ensuring that “talents are brought back to industry” through high-tech empowerment.
The platform serves as a unified ecosystem where managers can test “what-if” scenarios—ranging from ship prioritization policies to crane workload balancing—ensuring that every move in the port is calculated for maximum efficiency and minimum environmental impact.
Challenges · Solution · Results
- Logistics Bottlenecks: Critical delays caused by unpredictable vessel arrival windows and static, unresponsive crane allocation strategies.
- Operational Inefficiency: High fuel consumption and yard congestion resulting from suboptimal routing for yard trucks and equipment.
- Visibility Gaps: A lack of real-time, immersive insights into how dynamic variables (like weather or mechanical failure) impact the entire port ecosystem.
- Multi-Method Simulation: Deployment of EBI Sim (powered by AnyLogic) to model vessel berthing, quay crane usage, and intricate yard logistics.
- Dynamic Optimization Engine: Integration of an AI-driven engine that evaluates scheduling policies (FIFO, SPT, COVERT) to prioritize vessels in real-time.
- High-Fidelity Digital Twin: Leveraging NVIDIA Omniverse to create a 3D environment for real-time visualization and risk-free scenario testing.
- Enhanced Throughput: Significant improvement in equipment utilization rates across both Quay Cranes (QC) and Yard Cranes (YC).
- Sustainability Gains: Measurable reduction in the port’s environmental footprint through optimized traffic flow and reduced idle times.
- Strategic Decision-Making: Faster, data-driven oversight for managers via the EBI Analytics dashboard, connecting OT and IT data seamlessly.

Background & Goals
Modern maritime hubs face a widening talent gap and an aging workforce. EMAA Blue Industries’ mission is to make the industry “efficient and inspiring” again by replacing “low-tech” manual tracking with high-performance digital tools. The primary goal of this project was to provide energy-intensive port SMEs with a specialized service center approach, upskilling operators into “Smart Operators” who can manage complex quay and yard variables through a single, unified interface.
Implementation & Methodology
The implementation utilized the EBI Twin+ module to create a real-time link between physical port assets and their digital counterparts. We integrated specific optimization policies—such as Earliest Due Date (EDD) and Cost Over Time (COVERT)—allowing the system to automatically suggest the most efficient berth allocation. By utilizing Training-First Digitalization, we ensured that port staff were mentored on the new system within the first 30 days, turning the digital twin into a collaborative tool for everyday operational excellence.
